Trance
2024.06.21-2024.08.11
EYECANDIES X Kuiyuan Art Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition "Trance".
A specific variant of consciousness is defined in psychology as a state in which an individual temporarily loses his or her sense of self and has difficulty controlling thoughts and actions. This state has manifested itself in different eras and cultures in the enduring pursuit of transcendence and spiritual connection. In Taoism, deindividuation refers to a state of inner cultivation in which the yang-shen detaches from the physical body to transcend the boundaries of matter, life, and death. Upon reaching this state of cultivation, the Yang Shen can pass through the "gate of heaven" and realize the experience of "leaving the body". Shamanism is about communicating with the spirits through emanation and possession. The shaman's spirit leaves the body and interacts with supernatural spirits, or seeks out spirits to come down and possess the shaman to convey messages and guide ceremonial activities. In the field of contemporary art, artists explore and interpret the aesthetics and significance of the emergent state through their unique mediums and methods.
Deepsea
2024.06.21-2024.07.21
EYECANDIES X Kui Yuan Art Gallery is honored to present the solo exhibition "Deepsea" by plant artist Deepsea. In this exhibition, Deepsea integrates the concepts of "found" and "misplaced", organically combining abandoned found objects with green plants and flowers, and giving regenerative beauty to ordinary things. The exhibition focuses on Deepsea's meticulously created floral landscapes, floral arrangements, and installations so that you can feel the greenness of the interior of your house from Deepsea in the summer. Indoor greenery from Deepsea. Since he was a child, Deepsea has been deeply interested in nature. He often lingered alone in the countryside, observing the unique texture of each leaf or the gesture of each flower in full bloom. Through years of observation, contemplation, and creation, he gradually developed his own artistic philosophy: in a complex world, plants can be a symbol of balance and harmony, a haven for the soul, they soothe wounds and bring purification to the body and mind.
Desire
2024.05.04-2024.06.16
EYECANDIES invites three young female artists to create a group exhibition with the theme of "Desire". Women no longer exist as "muses" or "objects"; they are the subjects of creation and desire. London-based oil painter Xingxin Hu paints ambiguous scenes with gentle tones and brushstrokes - most of her works depict partial parts of the body as if they were close-ups of characters' bodies in a movie set. The second artist, Wang Weijue, chooses wool fiber as her main medium of creation. Taking wool as a clue, she explores the appropriation and lack of rights faced by women's gender roles through installation and graphic art. In photographer Yushi's work, "Female Gaze" is the most thought-provoking theme. She not only emphasizes the active female perspective before and after the conceptualization of the images, but also adds the delicate expression of women in the use of emotions.
Hello, Qiurui Du & TELENOVELAS」
2024.03.16-2024.04.21
"Hello, Qiurui Du" reviews Du Qiurui's creative journey from 2018 to the present, using emotions in life as a clue. In the exhibition, viewers will experience emotional resonance from the works that carry Qiurui's unique perception and understanding of life and social continuity in the past few years.
Taking Telenovela, a Latin American TV drama genre, as a clue, "Romantic Soap Opera" presents Qiurui's fantasies of life in a dramatic form. The vivid interpretations of daily life in the exhibition are like windows into a romantic and twisted world.WAKE OF THE WIND

EYECANDIES x Kui Yuan Gallery Shanghai is delighted to kick off the new year with solo exhibition Wake of the Wind, featuring artist Yuan Zuo and his collection of paintings, prints, and mix media works.
Just like the wind, which can gently stir movement or whisk us away to unexplored territories, artists of our time face various forces that pull and push them on their artistic journey. Through the practice of abstraction, artists like Yuan can actively engage with this globalized landscape, forging new artistic paths that reflect the intricate complexities and boundless possibilities of our ever-evolving world.

RED TIMEZONE
2023.10.14-2023.11.26
The curatorial purpose of an immersive viewing experience in red is to recognize the use of red (in fact of any one color) as a vital form of expression. Michel Pastoureau, a renown French scholar of medieval history and symbolism, once said, “a color never stands alone; it only derives its meaning, it only fully ‘functions’ from the social, artistic, or symbolic perspective...Hence, it is impossible to consider it in isolation.” Having that in mind, while the exhibited artists share creative interests in the color red, it is crucial to review each of their unique approaches in reflecting upon various subject matters of universal or contemporary significance, and to see how individual artist is utilizing the color red as both the source of inspiration and a creative element.

SUMMER PARADISE
2023.08.26-2023.10.06
The development of any relationship is accompanied by mutual understanding and mutual restraint. The four female artists participating in this exhibition drew inspiration from their own experiences and family memories. They sew, embroider, print, and paint, using canvas as a carrier and creating images full of tension. In a way, making art is both a self-repair process and a prerequisite for maintaining constant movement. Because of the societal expectations and constraints placed on women, needlework used to be an essential part of "housework."
LIVING LIFE ALONG PATHS
2023.07.08-2023.08.20

PLAYHOUSE
2023.05.20-2023.07.02
“PLAYHOUSE” attempts to participate in and witness the growth of the subjectivity of the artists and the viewers,
transcending the notion of objects within the Doll's House, revealing the childlike innocence and the sincerity of the
"protagonist" inside and outside the painting, sharing the power embedded in the artwork to the “self” and the other.
VIEWING
2023.04.01-2023.05.14
Da Xiang means the shape of the universe, which cannot be described by what people see by their eyes. Such a greatness is shapeless. Zhen is the truth, and sincerity. And when it comes to the fact, sometime ‘the pure white(bai) is the muddiness’, thus the title in Chinese Da Xiang Zhen Bai. After the past three years of experience, we can understand the existence of ‘Tao’ through ‘examples’. One cannot see the mountains when he is in the mountains. The paintings between the artist and the beholder are just like into-out of the mountains. I would like to travel with you into them, to another time and space, to feel the colors, speed, thickness, space, shape and invisibility, and to leave a piece of imagery and imaginary dimension of each self. Here, everything is just a clue, the answer only exists in your heart.
FABLE OF SPACETIME
2023.02.11-2023.03.26
Instead of being deliberate embellishment, the exquisite brushwork is true expression of the dreamy subconsciousness, not meaningless beauty, but Zhuo Ying’s sentiments brimming in between her brush and canvas, even surpassing the significance of reality. To be more specific, Zhuo Ying’s works display the overlapped forces between consciousness and unconsciousness, but more extensive and profound than reality.
TOOTH&TOY
2022.12.10-2023.02.06
Lin Yusi has a strong professional competence in shuimo (ink wash) art and a rich imagination, which allows the versatile styles and the forms shown in his works, which are always in search of variations in infinite possibilities, with multiple threads coexisting. No matter it is landscape, flowers and birds, or figures, he paints their critical state in the real world, with the freehand, half-freehand, or fine brushworks. Lin’s painting language transcends the a priori traditional realistic norms, representing a new value in contemporary art. His works have both the traditional charm of ink and its texture and a sense of the trends of the time. He is not confined to tradition, as ink and brush are only his painting tools. His creations are rooted in ink and wash and yet transcend it, giving rise to infinite possibilities. His works are not only a perception of current life, but also an inquiry and expression of himself. In those scenes that are vivid, unadorned, curious, or refreshing, we can see the fine lines as the continuum of the traditional shuimo, repeatedly washed, however presented with a new language that is varied, strange but lovely.
A PORTRAIT OF A ~GOOD ~WILL
2022.10.28-2022.12.04
Artist Qiurui Du were born in the 90s, growing up with a comic and digital world around him. Coming to 21st centry, he continued the tradition of creating portraiture in art history and painted for people around him. For him, the purpose of painting portraits is not to convey the nobility or power of the privileges, nor to belittle or ridicule the commoner, but to record the youth life of the minority groups around him in a democratic way with his own imagination. His works are the mix of "Ukiyo-e" and "Popism", which record his personal emotions and memories, but also clearly depicts your life and mine.
